S.O.T.D. - Ikea Hacker

The DH Site Of The Day is a personal favorite that I love to browse for hours on end.

ikea hacker

This site is all about repurposing relatively inexpensive ikea furniture to serve other purposes and look fantastic while doing it.

One of my favorites is this dog bed that they made out of two ikea desk-ends.

The Cost Of A New Dog

Now that we're adding a new dog to the family, we're starting to round up the associated costs.  Even though we currently have a dog, it doesn't mean that we already have everything we need.  There are a few things they can't share.

Here's our current tally:

- Humane Society Charges (adoption fee): $117.00

- New Dog Crate: $60.89

- Dog Collar: $6.85

- 2 Dog Bowls (2 x $5.49): $10.98

- Gentle Leader Collar: $18.17 (A necessity when leash training your dog - always remember: Be The Pack Leader!)

- 4-for-3 Amazon Promotion: -$5.49

= Total = 208.40

All of these items included free 2nd-day shipping, leveraging my amazon prime membership.

There are a few costs that we haven't incurred yet:

- Additional Food Costs = ?? - Though this should be fairly minimal.  We get very good healthy food for our current dog, but she doesn't go through it that quickly.  Being that we're brining in the same-size dog, I'm anticipating that the food costs will roughly be doubled.

- Additional Medicine from Spay = ?? - The humane society adoption includes a spay coupon.  But, we'll still need to pay for pain killers and any additional medicine needed.

- Misc = ?? - Things like "Poop bags".  These purchases are very minimal and I'm anticipating a double in cost to also be very minimal.

Contemplating A New Member [Final Update]

photo credit: mandoluxFinally, I have great news to report!  Our application went through and we WILL be adopting a chocolate lab.  She has the sweetest temperment you'd ever encounter.  We took our current dog over to see how they get along together, and not suprisingly, they were laying together after just a few minutes.  They desperately wanted to play, but that'll come in due time.

The humane society is sending her out to be spayed in the very near future and we'll get her after that.  I can't wait!!

Contemplating A New Member [Updated 2]

photo credit: mandoluxUnfortunately, we still have been unable to add a new furry member to our family.  Many emails, calls, trips were made and little to nothing came of it.

We did see a chocolate lab that we really liked at our local humane society.  And while our application is still pending, given that we're not first in line, I'm not holding my breath.  Rather than sending out even more requests to the dozens that have already gone out, we're going to wait and see what happens with our application.  If we don't get the dog, we'll wait and let things settle down a bit.

I'm just getting too frustrated with the entire process.

Contemplating A New Member [Updated]

photo credit: mandoluxSadly, we haven’t heard anything back yet on the initial emails sent out on our quest to adopt another dog.  We ended up filling out an application for a local SPCA yesterday after seeing a nice dog they had available for adoption, which they forwarded on to the foster family.  Unfortunately, it looks like there is someone ahead of us in line for that one.

We found another association with a couple of promising dogs last night, but haven’t filled out an application there yet.  I was hoping for some of the loose ends to be tied up first with our open requests.  Maybe we will anyway if we don’t hear anything back today.
